Marble countertops have defined luxury for over two thousand years — from ancient Roman palaces to modern Cherry Hill kitchens and master baths. At Modern Stone Design, we curate the finest Italian and domestic marble for South Jersey homeowners who refuse to compromise on beauty.
The Unmatched Beauty of Real Marble
No engineered surface can replicate marble. The natural depth, the soft veining, the subtle variations in color and pattern — these come from millions of years of geological pressure transforming limestone into stone. Each marble slab tells a unique story, and over time, marble develops a patina that becomes more beautiful with age.
Popular marble varieties in our Cherry Hill showroom:
Carrara Marble
Carrara marble, quarried from the famous Carrara region of Italy since Roman times, features soft grey-blue veining on a white background. The most affordable and approachable Italian marble, Carrara is a classic choice for Cherry Hill bathroom vanities and accent kitchen islands.
Calacatta Marble
Calacatta features dramatic gold and grey veins on a brighter white background. More rare than Carrara (and pricier), Calacatta varieties include Calacatta Borghini, Calacatta Gold, and the ultra-luxurious Calacatta Vagli.
Statuary Marble
Statuary marble is the bright white, fine-grained marble Michelangelo used to carve David. With minimal veining and pure white background, Statuary delivers serene, modern luxury.
Other Premium Marble
We also stock Crema Marfil (warm beige Spanish marble), Emperador (rich brown with white veining), Nero Marquina (dramatic black with white veins), and other specialty marbles.
Where Marble Countertops Excel — and Where They Don’t
Honest truth: marble isn’t ideal for every application. Here’s where marble shines and where you should consider alternatives:
Marble works beautifully in:
- Master bathrooms — minimal acidic exposure, stunning visual impact
- Kitchen islands as accents — paired with quartz on perimeter for daily-use durability
- Pastry and baking stations — marble’s cool temperature is ideal for working dough
- Coffee tables and console tables — limited use, maximum beauty
- Fireplace surrounds — heat-resistant, dramatic in bookmatched applications
- Powder rooms — minimal use means easy maintenance
Reconsider marble if: you’re a heavy cook (use quartzite instead for marble looks with durability), you prefer pristine surfaces with no patina, or your budget for ongoing care is limited.
Caring for Marble Countertops
Marble requires more attention than granite or quartz, but it’s not difficult — just different. With proper care, your marble countertops will last generations:
- Seal annually — we apply a high-quality sealer at installation and recommend re-sealing each year
- Wipe spills immediately — especially red wine, citrus juice, and cooking oils
- Use coasters — even sealed marble can etch from acidic drinks
- Avoid abrasive cleaners — only pH-neutral stone cleaners
- Embrace patina — minor etching softens marble’s character over time
Honed vs Polished Marble Finish
Marble comes in two primary finishes:
Polished marble has a high-gloss reflective surface that shows off veining beautifully. It’s traditional, formal, and stunning — but it shows etching marks more visibly.
Honed marble has a soft matte finish. It hides etching, looks more contemporary, and feels softer underhand. Many South Jersey homeowners now prefer honed for both kitchens and baths.
